A day full of C.A.R.E – Center for Animal Research & Education

tiger1

At first, it sounds like your average GTT events; a wonderful day spent helping the elderly, the young, those with cancer, the abused, those near death, the deaf, the destitute, those in morning and needy in so many other ways.  Yes, we fed the hungry, we listened to those who spoke, we talked to those who’d listen, we cleaned their homes and we played, played, played.  We medicated the sick and we worked to build a lasting memorial for those residents that have passed on.  But no, this day was definitely not your normal day…  It was special beyond words.  We left our comfort zones and spent the day with our newest friends that we will not soon forget; 1 Snow Leopard, 6 Cougars, 6 Black & Spotted Leopards, 3 African Lions, and 39 White and Orange Tigers in Bridgeport, Texas, the home of C.A.R.E.

The Center For Animal Research and Education was founded as a NON-profit organization in 2003 to provide for the rescue, rehabilitation, and holistic nurturing of sick, injured, and abused Big Cats. C.A.R.E. is dedicated to providing these majestic creatures with a safe habitat so they can live with dignity and comfort.  Further, with public education and research, to ultimately ensure the future of the species.  The Center for Animal Research & Education is working to help turn the tide of the abused and abandoned big cat. Founder Heidi Berry and countless volunteers are the driving force behind the Center’s mission. Their tireless devotion to the care and welfare of the great cat family is the foundation on which the Center was built. It is the organization’s staff, volunteers, members and donors who hold the hope and promise for the future welfare of the magnificent creatures that depend on CARE for a safe haven.

Give Time Together 2010 - Zoo Villa Dolores

Every GTT edition concludes with a great story to tell, invaluable experiences gathered by the participants and strong feelings of accomplishment in what’s been given back to the community. However, this year the Montevideo GTT at the Zoo exceeded the highest expectations.

A very ambitious project from the beginning, the Zoo was considered and evaluated and thanks to courageous leadership by Jean Shaw, our Center’s VP and the committed effort from organizers, team leaders and volunteers, the Zoo was a GO and all challenges were conquered.

The project was the result of about two months of intensive planning, organization and coordination. Selected after seriously considering which place would make the biggest impact on the children of Uruguay and their education, the Zoo offered huge potential in the sense that it’s a unique place at the heart of the city, where most children have their first and only contact with real animals and their environment. Furthermore, the park becomes the best place to learn about the animal world, surrounded by beautiful trees and green areas.

In order to start planning the event, we met with the Zoo’s authorities and were extremely impressed by the Zoo’s Director, Fernando Cirillo who assured us from the beginning that he would take care of all public permits and that we should feel free to make renovations everywhere we wanted, except of course for the animal habitats which need to be handled by professionals.

Cuddling Kitties in Need: San Francisco’s SPCA Event

As residents will proudly tell you, San Francisco has more pets per capita than children. Fog City natives are softies for our furry, four-legged friends and so when the Give Time Together event at the SPCA was announced, the slots filled up within hours and soon a waiting list began. The ten lucky volunteers who joined the group got the chance of a lifetime and had the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of cats in need.

The day started with a tour of the state-of-the-art facilities here in S.F. They were built with a very generous donation from a dot-com millionaire in honor of his beloved, departed dog, Maddie. Then we went through an hour-long training class, learning the right way to handle cats–and particularly cats who have had hard lives.

Next, we donned hospital scrubs and got down to…playing! The team split up and visited the cats in the center, spending one-on-one time with each. We were all touched by how much something as small as a scratch under the chin meant to these adorable orphans.

Check it out!
