Denver Helps the Hungry

On May 10 2012 , 18 Denver based employees contributed their time to volunteering at the Food Bank of the Rockies. Participating employees represented Sabre Hospitality as well as members from Travelocity. 2012 marks the third year that we spent at the Food Bank. As a team we not only have a great time every time we go but get a chance to really make a difference locally. Our efforts and hard work are always welcomed and appreciated by the staff running the Food Bank and we look forward to seeing them each year. It’s very clear to see why this is quickly becoming a tradition for our team.

The Food Bank of the Rockies is responsible for distribution of food items to several local food pantries across the state of Colorado and Wyoming. The central warehouse collects donations from major Companies as well as Individuals. Their main task is to store, sort, and distribute donations to various food pantries throughout the Rocky Mountain States. Individuals are able to receive food assistance directly from the pantries which makes it very obvious how the team’s hard work makes an immediate difference to those in need. Individuals needing assistance are encouraged to visit the website of the Food Bank to receive information on where they can go to receive help.

This year our team worked in the warehouse, fulfilling orders placed by various local pantries. We arrived mid day to complete orders placed by the pantries that were going to be picked up the next morning. Food Pantries are able to order items from the warehouse online which get completed and are ready for pickup the next day. One order can comprise of a total weight of anywhere between 500 to 2,000 pounds of items. Working in teams of 2 we gathered the items that were ordered throughout the warehouse and prepared them for the next morning’s pickup. As a team we were able to complete all orders and take pride in knowing that the items would soon be delivered to those in need.

It’s always amazing to see how the Food Bank operates like a well oiled machine and how appreciative they always are to see us return year after year.

Sabre-Ton 2012

In our case, as usual, this week we did the Sabre Ton 2012. This activity is like a “Rally” beginning from Monday 7 and ended on Friday 11. Our goal with this activity is to:

- Incorporate the team (Home based Employees, Bogotá, Field Support in Cali and Barranquilla)

- Familiarization with the tools (FB, Blog, The Good Network Tool, PSP)

- Presentation of our programs (GTT, GT and Eco-team)

- Official launch of the Foundation that we are supporting this year.

Activities:

  • Monday, 7: Team creation, people should found through clues their teams and their captain
  • Tuesday, 8: Assignment of the First Mission “Sabre’s Got Talent ‘acts are required to present with a message that involves any of our programs through thru a talent that they have.
  • Wednesday, 9: Assignment of the Second Mission “Sabre Ton Awards”, each team will award at the gala on Friday a partner that were assigned so that everyone on the team will be recognized in a creative and highlighting qualities.
  • Thursday 10: Evaluation and approval of the missions.
  • Friday 11: Presentation “Sabre’s Got Talent”, “Sabre-ton Awards” and a round of activities. Those activities had a degree of difficulty because included activities with eyes covered. In this way we give an introduction to the Foundation “Semillas”, which works with visual impaired children, deaf-blind and multi-deficit. With the aim of familiarizing, engage and raise awareness on the team why this foundation needs us. Thus, from May until October we will be doing our raising funds.

Just to clarify that for this month, also is scheduled to visit the Foundation “Semillas” for the delivery of the money that Sabre matched last year’s.

Earth Hour — Colombia

On March 31st we celebrate the Earth Hour. The main purpose of this activity is to stop the degradation of the Earth’s natural environment and also build a future where people live in harmony with nature. Organized by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) this event it’s one of the world’s largest and most respected independent conservation organizations.

To participate on the “Earth Hour” were invited more than 5,200 cities and 135 countries worldwide to switch off their lights for one hour, sending a powerful message for action on climate change.

Colombia team invited their members to participate below a campaign, as this day was a Saturday and we weren’t working, the idea was to take a picture in that moment, and then with those pictures create a poster as a reminder of that day to reflect how we contributed just switching off our lights for one hour

Sabre Finance Adopts Tarrant Area Food Bank as Charity for 2011

Sabre Finance has historically done a lot to help our community.  In years past, we have supported a number of local charities throughout the year– Boys and Girls Club, Lone Survivor Foundation, GRACE.

This year, our team decided to change things up a bit and “adopt” a charity for all of 2011.  With ~120 members, our Finance team can make a significant difference for one charity over the course of a year.  We set out to do just that in 2011!

In December we opened up the vote for all of the Finance team to nominate a charity, and decided to “adopt” the Tarrant Area Food Bank.

Sabre Pacific Auckland – Auckland ZOO Volunteer Morning

Thinking of ideas for our Give Time Together, we gave many suggestions to our organiser Clementine. She kept her head down, thinking away, when one day she sent a message around that simply said – Keep Friday 06th May free; We’re going to Auckland Zoo for our give time together!

 Interesting choice, we thought!

Everyone started asking questions – What will we be doing? Do we get to meet and feed the animals? Can we take a pet home? Then the question was asked… Will we be shovelling animal excrete? (In perhaps coarser wording!)

Our faithful leader, Clementine, kept quiet and told us to meet at the Zoo at 8.15am sharp on Friday 06th May. “Don’t forget to wear old clothes and bring spare clothes, there’s shower’s available at the zoo” we were told when we left the office on Thursday night. (more…)
